When Does UVA Start in the Morning?
Not at sunrise. UVA becomes a meaningful part of the light once the sun climbs to roughly 10 degrees above the horizon, which takes about 50 to 100 minutes after sunrise depending on season and latitude. UVB follows later, near 30 degrees. At sunrise itself the light is red, infrared and blue, with almost no ultraviolet.
The reason is path length. With the sun on the horizon, its light crosses roughly 38 times as much atmosphere as it does from directly overhead. Air molecules scatter short wavelengths far more strongly than long ones, in proportion to the inverse fourth power of wavelength, so violet and ultraviolet are stripped from the direct beam first. By 10 degrees the path has shortened to about 5.6 atmospheres and UVA, 315 to 400 nanometers, starts arriving in quantity. UVB, 290 to 315 nanometers, is also absorbed by ozone, which is why it needs the sun three times higher again.
Sunrise is a horizon event. UVA rise is a sun-angle event.
Sunrise is the moment the top edge of the solar disk appears. It tells you the direction of the sun and almost nothing about its spectrum. The first half hour after sunrise is dominated by red and near-infrared, with the scattered blue of the sky doing the circadian work through your eyes. That light sets the clock and is worth being outside for. It is not ultraviolet.
UVA rise is a separate moment, set by the sun's height rather than the horizon. People who track it are tracking a change in what the light can do to skin, not a change in brightness. Sun-app reviewers call this "daybreak" as distinct from sunrise.
Why 10 degrees, and why some apps say 15
UVA does not switch on. It ramps. Almost none reaches you below about 4 degrees, it builds steadily through 10, and it is fully in play by 15 to 18 degrees. Any app that marks a single "UVA rise" moment is choosing a point on that ramp. A reviewer who wrote that "UVA is present at 15 degrees, this app shows it way before" and the app being reviewed are describing the same curve from two points. Ten degrees marks where the skin responses below begin to register: an opening, not a starting gun.
How many minutes after sunrise
The wait from sunrise to 10 degrees depends on how steeply the sun climbs, which is set by latitude and date. The figures below come from standard solar-position geometry for a flat horizon at sea level and are approximate. Hills, buildings and tree lines push every time later.

The wait is shortest at the equinoxes, when the sun climbs at its steepest angle, and longest in December at both latitudes. And at 50 degrees north in winter there is a morning UVA window with no UVB window behind it, which is why morning light in winter is a different subject from vitamin D.
What UVA does once it arrives
UVA photolyzes nitrate and nitrite stores in the skin and releases nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure for hours afterwards (Liu 2014, Opländer 2009). The effect is dose-responsive and works in every skin type.
UVA also starts the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) cascade in keratinocytes, the pathway that yields beta-endorphin and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. UVA initiates a partial cleavage; UVB later amplifies it to the full cascade. In the retina and skin, neuropsin (OPN5) responds to UVA as a threshold detector rather than a dose meter (Buhr 2015), so morning timing matters more than intensity for its mood and alertness effects.
On pigment, UVA produces immediate pigment darkening: it oxidizes melanin already present, giving a same-day tan that fades. New melanin synthesis waits for UVB.
UVA penetrates deeper than UVB, into the dermis, so the answer is timing and modulation rather than volume. Catch the first hour of it with skin exposed; do not chase it. If you take a photosensitizing drug such as doxycycline, amiodarone or a thiazide diuretic, UVA is the band that causes the reaction, and the morning window is not automatically safe for you.
How to see UVA rise without an app
A closed fist held at arm's length spans about 10 degrees. When the sun sits one fist above a level horizon, UVA is rising. Three fists is 30 degrees and the start of UVB.
Your shadow works too: about 5.7 times your height at 10 degrees, 1.7 times at 30 degrees, and shorter than you above 45 degrees, the middle of the UVB window.

The UV index reads 0 through most of it
At 10 degrees of sun the UV index is typically 0 or 1, and it is usually still 1 or 2 at 20 degrees. The index is a sunburn-weighted score that UVB dominates, so the UVA arriving on your skin barely registers in it. This is much of why a UV app can say 0 while the sun is out.
What to do with the morning sequence
- Be outside within the first hour after waking for the circadian signal. Brightness counts here, 10,000 lux or more even under cloud; UV is not required.
- Note UVA rise for your latitude and season, roughly one fist of sun above the horizon, and get skin, not just eyes, into the light for 10 to 20 minutes.
- Treat UVB rise, about 30 degrees or three fists, as the start of the vitamin D window, and time longer exposures by skin type from there.

The morning is a sequence, not a moment. Dawn light sets the clock, UVA rise opens the nitric oxide and POMC signals, and UVB rise opens vitamin D. Each arrives at a different sun angle, and knowing which one you are standing in is most of what it means to use sunlight well.

- Yes, in reduced amounts. Thin or broken cloud passes most of it, and thick overcast can cut it by half or more. UVA also passes through ordinary window glass, which is why you can tan or burn slowly behind a car window while making no vitamin D.
- Is the UV index a measurement of sunlight?
- No. The UV index is a sunburn-weighted score: solar UV weighted by how efficiently each wavelength reddens skin, then summed. UVB dominates that weighting and UVA barely registers, so the index is a proxy for burn risk and says little about the rest of the light. Two moments with the same index can carry very different spectra, and the index reads 0 or 1 through most of UVA rise.
